Where No Visitor Has Gone Before: "A Day in the Life of a San Antonio Zoo Docent" by Suzanne Stanley, Zoo Docent Chairperson I arrive at the San Antonio Zoo in the morning, a bit tired and sluggish, dressed in my Docent uniform of khaki and white. However, I am soon awakened by the wonderful sights, sounds, and smells of the amazing wildlife. This begins my day as a San Antonio Zoo Docent. Whether on a weekday or weekend, a docents day consists of learning about exotic
animals, interacting with people, and being focused on the conservation of the plants and
animals around us. One of the most fulfilling rewards of being a Docent is the opportunity to work closely with the Zoo staff and animals. According to Zoo Director Steve McCusker, "Our facility couldnt possibly operate at the level it does without the many volunteer hours that are contributed by our Docents. We certainly appreciate the effort these individuals put forth." It is this type of respect and partnership that we develop with the staff as we strive together to educate our visitors about the fascinating creatures around us! For me, personally, one of the unsung benefits of my 13 years in the Docent program is the wonderful people I have met. Docents and Zoo staff share a common interest, work toward a common goal, and become friends along the way. Whether I am giving a tour, presenting a handleable animal to a school, or contributing one of my many other services as a Docent, I feel in some way I am making a difference.
